Sapphire is a group of gem stones that are not so well known to the general public. However, people who work in the gem industry treasure and value them for their beauty and high value. Generally, there are several gem stones that fall under the category of Padparadschas. These sapphires are available in a wide range of colors and luster. When in need of padparadscha sapphire should be visited.

Some colors are more common than other. The rarest colors are in fact hardly seen. The name Padparadscha is derived from the Sinhalese word, which means aquatic lotus blossom when translated into English. The color can range from salmon color with an orange hue to pinkish hue. The colors are usually not even because it is possible to find a stone that has yellow and pink hints around the salmon color.

The exact valuation of the gem is often topic of discussion, with some people holding the thought that it should cost more. Another debate that surrounds the stone jewel is the source of its name. Although current classification places the gem in a class of its own, this was not always the case. It was considered a sub-variety of ruby some years ago.

Sri Lanka is the major source of the gem and the name is influenced by a local Sri Lankan language. The Umba valley in Tanzania is also a source of some sapphires in the market. Umba valley supplies sapphires with a darker color and brownish overtones. The darker hue is considered a deviation from the standards and as such, Tanzanian sapphire does not qualify as a Padparadscha to many traders.

The color of most sapphires and ruby is a function of color intensity. The same is not true for Padparadscha because it displays a delicate combination of pink and orange. One can get the best display of color when the view the gem using daylight or fluorescent light. Mornings and evenings give the best color display. The color is not brought out well in incandescent lights.

Compared to ruby, sapphire has a tendency of being cleaner. When buying, the trick is to select stones than lack any inclusions visible to the naked eye. Pastel shades are common for most Padparadschas and the presence of any inclusions is easily visible. Therefore, eye-clean stones are the ones to go for if one wants to get the best value for the price they pay.

There is a wide variety of cutting styles and shapes that Padparadschas are available in on the market. The most commonly available shapes on the market are cushions and ovals. Rounds, emeralds and other shapes are also available, but not so much. People often have to pay slightly above the market price for rounds. Cabochon-cut is rare to see.

Generally, Padparadschas are very expensive gems, with prices rivaling those of emerald and ruby. A single carat can cost as high as 30, 000 USD. However, the supply is very short, making low-quality gems to flood the market. The low-quality varieties can cost only a few dollars for a carat.
