Increasingly, people turn to herbal treatments involving chamomile for thrush treatments, as they look for remedies which do not have a chemical basis. Thrush is a fungal infection caused by a yeast called candida. This is carried in the body with no problem by most people in areas of the body which are often moist or damp.

The immune system can become unbalanced though, leading to the yeast thriving much more than it should. Thrush can result, and tends to occur in parts of the body which are often moist, such as the mouth or the genitals. New mothers who are breastfeeding their infants can often fall victim to the condition on their nipples.

Thrush causes the skin to become sore and itchy, with redness and inflammation also occurring. Treating the condition can be problematic, with restoring the immune system's balance often difficult. Chamomile is one of a number of herbal substances which can be used to alleviate the symptoms of the condition.

The use of chamomile by human beings goes back many thousands of years, with the herbal extract being processed in a number of different ways. Roman and German are the two varieties of the plant most commonly used medicinally. The two types possess the same medical qualities, but the German variety is the one which is more commonly used in the United States.

The plant is perhaps best known for its reported sedative effects, with many people viewing it as an effective remedy for insomnia. Many use it as an ingredient in a bed time drink, while it has also been accredited with qualities which may help the digestive system. Some believe that it helps treat thrush as it works against an excess of yeast in the body.

The herb extract can also be incorporated into salves or ointments, which can then be applied to the skin. It should be noted though that the herb is a member of the ragweed family of plants, to which some people are allergic. If the application to the skin aggravates any feelings of itchiness then use should be discontinued.

As with any kind of medical treatment, professional advice should be sought before using chamomile for thrush. Even products which are considered entirely natural can have unforeseen side effects. Even when a product has been shown to work on one person, different circumstances may mean that it does not work in the same way for someone else.
