For some individuals, choosing which jewelry to wear can be as simple as coordinating it with whatever outfit they are wearing. For individuals with a metal allergy, however, this process may take a lot more thought and planning. If you fall into this second category, items such as hypoallergenic earring posts may be just one of the things that you look for when you are adding a new piece to a jewelry collection. Here are some other tips that you can use to make a metal allergy more bearable.

One thing that many people find most frustrating about this condition is that it can develop suddenly and even pieces that have been worn without a problem in the past can suddenly cause a reaction. The itching, redness and hives that can develop may last for days or even weeks after a piece has been taken off. You may have to do some trial and error testing in order to figure out if there are some pieces you can wear and, if so, for how long.

There are different levels of sensitivity. Some individuals can handle metal alloys that contain a very small amount of nickel whereas others cannot tolerate any nickel content at all. You may need to experiment with different alloys to find out which ones will not cause a reaction.

You may have heard people saying that the only metal they can wear is gold. They may say that white metals are not something that their skin can handle. The component in the white metal that they are reacting to is nickel. Unfortunately, this is often found in gold mixtures as well. Remember that only 24 karat gold is pure and it is too soft to hold its shape. This means that you may need to become creative when finding pieces that do not cause your skin to react.

Earrings can be fun to wear and can definitely make a fashion statement. They can, however, be the hardest items to purchase if you have a nickel allergy that you are dealing with. Depending on the style, you may react to the posts, to the backs or even the front of the earring. If it is designed for pierced ears, you may end up dealing with a severe reaction inside the piercing itself. It can also be difficult to get pure metals to be durable enough to stand up to use as a post for pierced ears.

Some individuals will try and use a clear coating to prevent their bodies from coming into contact with the metal. This may work for a short period of time but it will wear off in time and this puts you at risk of suffering an allergic reaction, perhaps when you least expect it. If you still decide to go this route, you may want to use it on pieces that you only wear for a short time such as a watch. You do not want to use coatings on areas that will be put into your body such as into a piercing.

Some individuals may choose other materials altogether. Instead of metal bracelets and necklaces they may opt for items made of natural cord and beads that may be made from bone or wood. If you do go this route, make sure that you check the entire piece to make sure that there are no clasps or beads that can come into contact with your skin.

The internet can be a great place for you to find options to wear. There are some sites that sell finished jewelry pieces that are completely nickel free. Other sites offer findings such as posts and backings that are made of metal that you should not react to.
