In the 16th century, a physician known as Paracelsus first developed a powerful, herbal healing tonic that would eventually be called "Swedish Bitters". Noted for its ability to heal many types of disorders, further research and refinement by Dr. Klaus Samst in 19th century Sweden, and the renowned Austrian herbalist Maria Treben in more recent times have made this preparation more potent than ever before. The benefits Swedish Bitters offers include improved energy, immunity, and healing which is a strong enough incentive to make users overlook its unpleasant flavor.

There are different ways in which this formula can be prepared. It can be made as both an alcoholic or non-alcoholic tonic by either adding the herbs to alcohol or combining them into a dried mix. Recipes vary, with some containing over twenty different herbs which may include aloe, thistle root, camphor, saffron senna, angelica root, rhubarb root, myrrh, and theriac venetian to name just a few.

As with any other natural supplement, it is recommended that anyone who is considering using this tonic first consult a physician to ensure safety. As a precaution, it should not be used by pregnant or nursing mothers, or those experiencing diarrhea. In general it can be taken by teens up to adults without side effects. The usual dose is one teaspoon stirred into tea or water between 2-4 times per day.

Perhaps this herbal formula is best known as a highly effective digestive aid. If it is taken before a meal, it is believed to maximize digestive processes and decrease incidence of painful bloating and indigestion by stimulating secretion of necessary enzymes by the salivary glands, stomach, liver, and gallbladder. With regular use, it also helps to prevent constipation and keep bowel activity healthy.

Itchy skin conditions such as chicken pox or insect bites can also be relieved by topically applying this tonic to the affected areas. Dabbing some of the mixture onto each sore or bite quickly soothes the irritation and itching, which in turn discourages scratching and promotes healing. Applying it as soon as one is aware of the itchiness, produces the best results.

A sore throat which occurs as a result of a bacterial or viral infection can also get better by drinking or gargling with Swedish Bitters. Pain will become less, and the voice will not be as hoarse when speaking. If gargling, 3 tablespoons should be mixed with water, and if drinking it is preferred, 1/2 teaspoon added to tea can be taken as many as six times a day before eating.

Mouth pain from a toothache or blisters on the tongue have also been found to subside when using the tonic. Either ailment can be improved by swishing with a solution of water and 1 tablespoon tonic, or in the case of tooth pain, a soaked cotton ball can also be applied directly.

People who battle chronic fatigue and have low energy may also feel naturally energized and less tired with by regularly taking the tonic. Inflammatory conditions such as arthritis, or injuries to the joints due to sprains can also be improved with the use of this powerful tonic as it contains certain anti-inflammatory properties.
