You have found, in this short piece of writing, the answer to better living through how we eat and how we live. It is too easy to get lost among the latest and greatest diets, and to pick out the facts from the fiction.

Pollution has become a major factor in an industrial world. Everything we eat or drink has been affected by the environmental toxins that surround us. In order to be rid of these toxins, we must change how we live and what we eat, including how we define our nutritional needs so that we can cleanse ourselves of those internal toxins.

Appropriate Ph levels are essential for every living thing on this planet. People require a Ph level of around 7.4, but few actually manage this by eating as our society has become accustomed. Few people would point to an imbalance in your body's acid levels as a threat, or cause for alarm. It isn't until you begin to realize that by keeping our body off balance, we are no longer able to heal from the simple stressors we are exposed to every day. Little aches and pains turn into longer lasting and more chronic pains, diseases breed in a rich environment of an unhealthy body, weight gain occurs, kidney stones form, and our blood pressure and cholesterol levels skyrocket. This is where the alkaline diet comes in, at a point in our lives when we cannot put off our own health any longer, and delivers the results we need to fix the damage to ourselves, and watch as living the alkaline way reverses potentially mortal diseases.

Humans have had such a drastic change from ancient times when we had to hunt and gather our foods, the amount of physical labor we did, and was required for daily life meant we burned off whatever we ate, and the food we had was far more pure, regardless the source. We have had both industrial and agricultural revolutions however, which has altered what we eat in vast ways. Our good and needed nutrients like potassium, magnesium and fiber have been replaced by chlorides, fats, sugars and sodium. Our kidneys end up overworked and unable to keep up which can lead to renal failure, also called metabolic acidosis. If left unchecked, that can include coma and death.

Benefits from eating alkalizing foods instead include the retention of muscle mass as we age, due to the high potassium level in fruits and vegetables, and a reduced acid load. It has also been shown to improve growth hormones, which improves our quality of life by reducing cardiovascular risk factors, and helping memory and cognition. People who suffer chronic low back pain who have switched to an alkaline diet have increased their intracellular magnesium resulting in the proper function of enzymes and activation of vitamin D, which in turn, removes the pain.
