Understanding Bikini Hip Replacement Procedure

The bikini hip replacement is a surgical procedure that targets to replace hip joints with a prosthetic implant. This can either be a total or semi replacement and is common to relieve arthritis pain. It is also performed to fix severe damages resulting from fractures. For total surgery also known as total hip arthroplasty, both the acetabulum and femoral head are replaced while only the femoral head is replaced in case of hemiarthroplasty (half surgery).

For patients suffering from most of arthritis including rheumatoid arthritis, avascular necrosis, protrusio acetabula, benign, malignant bone tumor, ankylosing spondylitis and any bikini fracture among several other related conditions all qualify for this procedure. It helps to relieve pain and allow the patient to resume other physical activities.

It is regarded as a minimally invasive procedure as the incision goes through the bikini line. The minimal reduction of the bone and tissues then follows after which implants are gently inserted using two portals normally less than two inches. The most common implants used are made of plastics or ceramic as the metallic ones have lost favor with most surgeons. All these are done with help of a local anesthesia to help reduce pain.

The implants used automatically grow into bone leading to very fast recovery. The mini-incision done helps preserve most of tendons and muscles. The tissues that are cut in the process are easily repaired which encourages very quick recovery and less bleeding. When the wound get healed, the resulting scar is hidden on the groin crease and is cosmetically pleasing.

With very big reduction on the time needed for recovery and over fifty percent reduction on the cost required for similar operations, this has emerged to be the most popular form of orthopaedic operation with over 97% approval rate as voted by patients with improved outcomes. Most of the patients are released from the hospital on the same day or on the second day and one will be able to drive in as little as 9 days after operation.

This is however not a procedure that will be recommended for very obese people and the category of patients who are very masculine as it becomes very difficult even on the hand of highly experienced surgeons. When complex hip revision is necessary, the procedure may also not work given the necessity for more incisions.

High rate of success and many advantages associated with this procedure are perhaps the reason for its popularity. The major success factors include less bleeding, less pain throughout and after the procedure and ability of resulting wounds to heal very fast. This also reduces chances of infections. The muscle weakness and immobilization common with other forms of surgeries are also greatly reduced. The scar is very small and in hands of a good doctor, the patient is not worried of possibility dislocations.

When performed by an experienced surgeon, such side effects and complications as bleeding, loosening of prosthesis, infection, blood clots and limb length discrepancy should not arise. Insurance organizations are also in support of this type of procedure as the total charges are far much less as compared to other similar procedures.
