Sciatica issues will be handled by a New York City chiropractor in a way that is cheaper, faster and less bothersome than taking prescription medication or physiotherapy. Sciatica is not a disorder or disease. It's a name for symptoms that occur when the sciatic nerve gets compressed. Chiropractic therapy helps identify the reason behind the dysfunction and uses certain techniques to reduce pain and restore the nerve's functionality.

The sciatic nerve runs from the lower back, through the buttocks, and all the way down from the thighs on each leg and into the foot. The main cause of dysfunction is a compression of this nerve due to herniated or bulging discs. This condition is also known as a slipped disc.

A lumbar spine subluxation is sometimes the cause, since it narrows the spinal canal and squeezes the spinal cord. Tumors that place pressure on the nerve may also be the reason, and so can fetuses carried by pregnant women. Yet another cause is Piriformis Syndrome or Wallet Sciatica. It refers to a hip-pocket wallet pushing constantly into the buttocks and compressing the sciatic nerve.

The symptoms are usually limited to one side of the body, from the lower back to the knee. There will be pain in the leg, buttock and lower back. Patients may also experience a certain amount of tingling, numbness and occasional sharp pricks in the leg.

Chiropractors decide what methods to use based on answers to a series of questions regarding the symptoms. A physical examination may be conducted to detect signs of abnormalities. MRIs, CAT scans and X-Rays are often called for.

Each New York City chiropractor has a repertoire of skills, although spinal adjustments are the mainstay of chiropractic therapy. Chiropractors use their hands to move vertebrae into their natural position within the spinal column. Some cases may require additional techniques such as ice and ultrasound heat therapy.
